JOURNALISM: Melindria Tavoularis

JOURNALISM: I knew Melindria Tavoularis from my time at The Tribune in Campbellton, New Brunswick. I was immediately impressed with the Restigouche Gallery, and Melindria was clearly a staple.

I was always curious about her story, with her American accent, and generous nature. So when asked to pitch some stories, she immediately came to mind. Unfortunately (but actually fortunately) our initial interview was over two-hours long. I could easily get 10x that material talking with her.

A story on Archie Harper in the Salon Section of the Telegraph Journal

JOURNALISM: Archie Harper — A great artist uncovered

I was doing a story for the Salon Section of the Telegraph Journal on the 40th anniversary of the Restigouche art gallery, when I started asking about the founder. No one knew much about it, but I did catch his name — Archie Harper.

I managed to track down a few folks who knew Archie by reputation only, then I found a few remaining friends, and then a family member. He was a pretty remarkable guy, and almost ended up completely forgotten.

Here’s a story I was able to piece together about his life, and his legacy in northern New Brunswick.

JOURNALISM: Studio 2

Studio 2 has become a much-needed hub in the northern New Brunswick city of Bathurst. Traveling musicians stop in, and local musicians get a chance to play, for attentive audiences in an intimate and relaxing atmosphere.

I got to write a story about the venue for the Salon section in the weekend Telegraph Journal. (Click the images to pull up the PDFs)

Adam Hodnett Journalism — Kedgwick River

FREELANCE JOURNALISM: I had a story appear in the September 5th issue of the Telegraph Journal in its Escapade Section.

I spent three days canoeing on the world famous Kedgwick River in north western New Brunswick, Canada. It was the first time doing a multi-day river run for the majority of the group, and we all loved it. Read more

The Tribune

I’m working in Campbellton, New Brunswick, and I’ve been very surprised. A lot of interesting stories have come up. A good chunk have come from Listuguj First Nation.

Wind Farm: The Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Secretariat brought a windfarm project to the area, and I love everything about it.

Jeff Barnaby: Jeff Barnaby is a talented filmmaker who recently got a lot of attention in the country. All for good reason. Watch “Rhymes For Young Ghouls” whenever you get the chance. (This page also has a story about one of the many ways Restigouche is trying to turn this place around).

Wapikoni: Wapikoni is a group of mobile studios that go around to First Nation communities and help them tell stories. It’s great, and they let me check out the set of one of the movies being shot.

David Alward on Greg Davis: The last MLA for the Campbellton area, Greg Davis, disappeared, and an eviction notice exposed some party bail outs and unexplained spending. I got to ask the Premier about it, when he was in town talking about resource development. He talked around the question, so I wrote that, and The Telegraph Journal printed it in one of its main sections.

Courts: I’m also getting to cover courts (which I love) every once and awhile. Here were two stories that we made bigger than the regular “snippets.”

Fred Mundle and Nursing Home: Fred Mundle is a local poet who won the Alfred G. Baily award, and this is the story I did about the governments announcement of a nursing home project that they previously shut down. This was just a few weeks before the election campaigns started.

Bruno Lurette: I’m not a big sports guy, but I’ve had the chance to do some decent profiles with athletes. Here’s one about the guy who brought Muay Thai kickboxing to the area. He’s also been organizing fights about once a month.

When the Mill Goes

This is my favorite story.

I’ve been learning a lot about web design lately. I used Bootstrap to create a very simple, responsive website.

Aside from a simple navbar and collapsible grid system, I added a disqus comment section at the end, as well as multiple sharing options.

I am now learning SASS and Compass.
