Molly’s

Originally posted here. Molly has always fascinated me, and I don’t eat there nearly as much as I would like. It’s unique, warm, and interesting. So I was delighted when she agreed to let me do a profile. It was an hour and a half interview.

Who Needs a Studio?

On Reddit.com—a social news aggregator—it was suggested that I listen to “lo-fi, satanic, weed-drenched pop.” Definitely not a genre I’ve ever seen in record stores.

While hiding from the cold beneath four layers of blankets in Fredericton, I was introduced to the homemade music of a Californian-based musician within hours of the link being posted. I streamed the music, requested a way to download it, and then paid $5 to have the 23-track album on my iPod. It’s been my walking music ever since.

“With that Reddit exposure last week I’ve probably made a couple hundred bucks,” Will Marquis told me over the phone.

Marquis wrote, self-produced, and distributed his album online without any resources traditionally supplied by music labels. Apparently you can challenge multi-million dollar companies with a $90 recorder and a free account from Reddit.com. Read more

Young Man Jailed for Five Months for ‘Brutally Assaulting’ His Girlfriend

An example of court reporting. Originally posted here

Ryan Brown was sent to jail for five months for beating up his new girlfriend. He violated his probation and breached an undertaking. Judge Mary Jane Richards handed down the sentence yesterday.

“I find it the most difficult thing to do to send a young person to jail,” said Judge Richards. “But I can’t say society is safe with you out there.” Read more

Beyond Absurdity

This is a paper I did for a Modern Drama course. We dealt with “Waiting for Godot” in class, and I took the final paper as an oppurtinity to also write about one of my favorites – Albert Camus. The more I think about it, the more Nihilism seems to be a terrible modern problem. Camus shows us a way out of that. (Edited by Dr. Robin Whittaker)

From One to The Other

I took a a second year research course in my final year to fulfill all the requirements of my English major. I took the opportunity to learn about Foucault and apply it to Heart of Darkness, the course text. I loved doing this research and I desperately hope to find ways to explore these ideas further. (Edited by Dr. Khurram Kurshid). Read more

CBC’s Shift

had two pieces on CBC’s Shift. My professor showed some of our pieces, and out of the 10 choosen, two were mine.

One was a documentary I did about my brother and his girlfriend. They tented on some land in North Tetagouche so that they could spend their summer gardening, raising chickens and turkeys, and helping the neighbors.

The other piece was a commentary with sound. It’s about trying out a hearing aid, and whether I even want to hear all the annoying high pitch sounds that I couldn’t hear from birth. There’s no music. It’s also my first attempt at a monologue and writing a story about myself. I still kind of like it.

Soundcloud

I host all of my audio journalism on this soundcloud page. I make a point to post everything (even if I don’t feature it on this website). Feel free to dig around here.
